Theme

Following a successful MIW'2000 workshop held in Greenwich University, London in September, this time we will continue to explore the issue of Web information management from various perspectives with an emphasis on Data and Text Mining on the Web. The Web, as effectively the largest heterogeneous data warehouse in the world, accommodates a huge amount of information in various nature which presents an exciting challenge to everyone. How to manage, retrieve, or even discover previously unknown useful information from the Web have been the research interests among researchers and practitioners from different disciplines.

The aim of MIW'2001 is to clarify the key tasks involved in the management of information on the Web with a special focus on data and text mining. We will try to answer questions such as: Is Web data mining any different from traditional data mining? Is text mining simply a combination of natural language processing and data mining? What are the differences between text mining, natural language processing, and information retrieval? What are the relationships among data mining, text mining and web mining? What are the promising text mining technologies? What are the successful (as well as unsuccessful) applications?

The relevant topics may include the following (but not limited to):

  • Data mining and knowledge discovery on the Web;
  • Text mining on the Web;
  • Web Information retrieval and extraction;
  • Web Document categorisation;
  • Database techniques for the Web;
  • Data warehousing on the Web;
  • Data visualisation on the Web;
  • High performance computing technology for very large databases;
  • Distributed database management techniques;
  • Digital library techniques.

Guest Speakers
  • Dr Xiao-wei Xu, Siemens, Germany
  • Dr Yves Kodratoff, Universit Paris Sud

Important Dates
  • Submission deadline: 28 February 2001
  • Notification of acceptance: 30 March 2001
  • Camera ready copies: 1 May 2001

Submission Details

Authors are invited to submit research contributions representing original, previously unpublished work. Submitted papers will be carefully evaluated based on originality, significance, and relevance to the workshop. All papers will be refereed by at least two members of the program committee. Accepted papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press as proceedings of the DEXA 2001 workshops. A selected number of accepted papers will be expanded and revised for possible inclusion in "Knowledge and Information Systems: An International Journal" by Springer-Verlag. Papers must be double spaced and no longer than 5000 words. Authors should submit full papers either:
